Food Safety in the Progressive era

Food safety was also assured for the American people by the Meat Inspection Act of 1906 and the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906.

The Meat Inspection Act decreed that the preparation of meat shipped across state lines was to be subject to federal inspection every step of the way.


The Pure Food and Drug Act furthered food safety by preventing adulteration (alcoholizing) or mislabeling of foods and pharmeceutical drugs.
