Progressive Amendments to the Constitution

The Progressive Era also saw numerous Amendments become a part of the Constitution.

The Sixteenth Amendment, passed in 1913, enacted a graduated income tax to off-set losses from the newly-lowered tariff.


The Seventeenth Amendment, also passed in 1913, established the direct election of US senators, by the people, in an attempt to remove Congressional graft.


The Eighteenth Amendment, passed in 1919, prohibited all alcohol in America.


The Nineteenth Amendment, passed in 1920, granted women the right to equal suffrage.
