The song describes how everyone is attempting to recover from the destructive conflitct, and are hoping that hard times will not come again. The story is told in a mournful tone as the people in some city attempt to be happy, but remain melancholy, in memory of the hard times they endured. This song reminds me of the hard times that the US is going through right now, and how we will doubtless feel, when the hard times move on. This song allows us to learn that in American history, hard times will knock us down, but we can pick ourselves up.
